Bishopsgate School - Sports Hall

The construction of a new £4.3m sports hall for a school in Surrey has been completed by LST Projects. Designed by architects Edgington Spink + Hyne, the facility is enabling children at Bishopsgate School to enjoy a vast range of activities as part of an extensive physical education programme.

LST was appointed to design and build the new two-storey sports hall, which features four badminton courts, a climbing wall, gym and multi-purpose studio as well as storage areas, changing facilities and toilets. A viewing balcony has also been constructed on the first floor and an open plan foyer at the main entrance.

Outside, LST was responsible for landscaping around the building, which has been designed to be in keeping with the rest of the school grounds.

The 12-month project was completed throughout lockdown and in time for the new school year in September 2020.

Shaun Tuffin, contracts director from LST said: “We had to work to a tight construction programme to ensure the sports hall was completed by August 2020 and overcome several major challenges along the way.

“A large part of the contract was delivered while the school remained open, so we had to make sure that children and staff were kept safe and any potential disruption was minimised. We also had to consider the needs of local residents as the main road into the site was very narrow. This required careful planning and communication to ensure the safe movement of construction vehicles.

“The impact of the Covid-19 crisis added further challenges but we responded quickly and effectively to new government guidelines. As well as implementing strict safety measures, careful planning and consultation with our client and sub-contractors, ensured we could continue to work in the safest way possible and without incurring any significant delays.”

Charlie Carver, school bursar from Bishopsgate School added: “Throughout the project I found LST Projects to be highly professional. The school developed an outstanding working relationship with both the contracts manager and site manager, which allowed for the excellent passage of information.  This led to any issues being dealt with quickly and aided decision making.

“I would have no hesitation in recommending LST and would consider them for any future projects at the school.”
