HMNB Portsmouth

VolkerStevin were assigned as the principal contractor on the Queen Elizabeth Class (QEC) Base Porting Infrastructure Project at Portsmouth Harbour. They appointed LST to work with them on the building structure, alongside their mechanical electrical contractors which involved design, supply and installation of the Primary Intake Substation Building Superstructure – which included steel frame works, noise attenuating insulation, roller shutters and, crucially, the external compound security fencing and gates.

There was no room for manoeuvre with this project – due to the delivery times of the aircraft carriers, the substation had to be completed in time to receive them, despite some of the extreme and severe weather conditions you can expect being in The Solent, in winter.

“We started the building element of the project in the winter months and we were concerned freezing temperatures could cause slow progress or delays for the brickwork. LST came to site and assured VS that they would take precautions to ensure this wasn’t the case.”
