Can we solve the productivity puzzle?

January 9, 2019

The construction sector has forged an unenviable reputation for poor productivity leading to worrying statistics about project delays. A big part of the issue is that there are many factors which could affect efficiency ranging from poor management and a lack of training through to unforeseen technical issues and even bad weather.

As a result, there is no one-size-fit- all solution for main contractors and more than one piece of the jigsaw required to solve the widely labelled ‘productivity puzzle’.

At LST, our approach to productivity is focused on stringent planning, collaboration, and engagement. Technology, such as project management software, also plays a part but ultimately, it’s our relationship with our employees and supply chain which makes a tangible difference to efficiency and the success of our projects.

From the outset and before we step foot on site, we prioritise collaboration. Our project team, including sub-contractors are brought together at the start of a project to work out how we can best overcome the challenges of working in live sites, and work together effectively.

This early engagement is crucial to set out consistent ways of working, reporting and sharing information so that everyone in the supply chain is aware of how best to communicate and work with each other.

We also offer incentives which encourage all parties to work together to improve efficiency and ultimately delivery. Regular progress meetings are key to this so that the best solution can be agreed if there are any issues which could impact the construction programme.

At the same time, our team is committed to reducing waste not only in terms of materials but time and costs. Our aim is to ensure only the people and plant that’s really needed on site, is on site and we set targets accordingly. Meeting these targets requires ever evolving procedures and processes but these are vital to drive efficiencies.

With competency coming into sharp focus following the Hackitt Review, so will the need to drive both efficiency and quality in construction. Advances in technology will certainly help in terms of outputs but as an industry, we mustn’t forget about the importance of people and the softer skills which are key to relationship building and collaboration.

This approach combined with careful planning holds the key to delivering more efficient projects and significantly higher levels of client satisfaction.
